"Super Excited" Jacob Bernard-Docker Can't Wait To Begin With Red Wings

It’s been a whirlwind offseason for Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman, who made waves with bold moves to reshape the team’s roster. The most notable of these transactions was the trade of the underperforming Vladimir Tarasenko and his hefty $4.75 million cap hit to the Minnesota Wild, signaling a fresh start for the Red Wings as they look to build a contender.

Alongside that deal, Yzerman signed several key free agents, including James van Riemsdyk, Mason Appleton, and Ian Mitchell, and also made a significant trade for veteran goaltender John Gibson. But perhaps one of the most exciting moves for the Red Wings was the acquisition of defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker, who is eager to make an immediate impact.

Bernard-Docker, who has spent time with both the Ottawa Senators and the Buffalo Sabres, believes that Detroit is the perfect landing spot for him as the team is on the cusp of a breakthrough season. “Detroit is on the edge of breaking out,” he said, noting similarities between the Red Wings and the teams he’s played for in the past, particularly their promising young cores. With 144 games of NHL experience under his belt and a gold medal from the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship, Bernard-Docker is ready to contribute and help elevate Detroit’s defense.

One area where Bernard-Docker sees himself making a real difference is the Red Wings’ penalty kill, which struggled mightily last season. "I'm willing to block shots and I’m pretty good on my stick,” he said, expressing confidence that his penalty-killing skills could be a major asset. If he can strengthen this part of his game, Bernard-Docker could quickly become a fan favorite in Detroit.

As the Red Wings’ training camp kicks off on September 18, followed by their first exhibition game against the Chicago Blackhawks on September 23, fans are eagerly anticipating the team’s next chapter. With Yzerman’s moves this offseason and Bernard-Docker’s arrival, Detroit could be poised for a breakout season—something that fans have been craving for years.
