Fans of Chicago P.D. were treated to a joyful surprise this week when star Marina Squerciati revealed that she welcomed her second child earlier this year — and had kept the news under wraps until now.

The actress, best known for her role as Detective Kim Burgess on the long-running NBC series, shared the heartfelt announcement on social media. In a candid message, Squerciati wrote, “Surprise! Our family grew earlier this year, and my heart is so full.”

Despite Squerciati’s typically warm and open relationship with her followers, this particular milestone was kept private. According to Squerciati, there was an important reason for the secrecy. “I really just wanted this time for my family,” she explained in an interview. “It was important to me to focus on my baby and let this part of my life remain just for us for a while.”

The star — who is also mom to her first child, born in 2017 — has often spoken about the joys and challenges of motherhood. Balancing a busy filming schedule with parenting is no easy feat, but Squerciati makes it look effortless. “Every day is different,” she told reporters. “But I feel incredibly lucky to do what I love and to come home to my beautiful family.”

Fans and colleagues flooded her Instagram with warm wishes. Many of her Chicago P.D. co-stars left heartfelt messages, including Jesse Lee Soffer and Tracy Spiridakos, who expressed their joy for the new arrival.

While Squerciati hasn’t shared too many personal photos just yet, she hinted that there might be more family moments to come. “I can’t wait to see my kids grow up together,” she wrote. “That’s the real reason I kept it private — I wanted to savor those first special moments as just ‘us’ before sharing them with the world.”

With so much love surrounding her and her growing family, it’s clear that 2024 is shaping up to be one of Squerciati’s most memorable years yet.
