Tage Thompson’s mind-boggling NHL record gives Sabres throwaway season a bright spot

It’s becoming clear that Sabres forward Tage Thompson is the NHL’s version of Aroldis Chapman after he set a sensational record.

Records are meant to be broken, so we’ll see how long Tage Thompson’s 103.7 mph goal holds. And who knows? Maybe the Sabres center will break his own record?

Tage is no stranger to taking hard shots, but his score at 12:49 in the second period of the Blue and Gold’s win over the Washington Capitals was one for the record books, per NHL Edge. Yeah, if Tage can just give the Sabres a few more shots like that, maybe in every game, then they’re going to score a lot.

Through this lost season, Tage has been a godsend of sorts for the Sabres, with 19 goals, 34 points, and a 17.8 shooting percentage. After fighting through an injury earlier in the year, it was a mystery of what Tage’s overall game would look like when he returned, but the Blue and Gold’s top center hasn’t missed a beat.

And while the Sabres still have a long way to go in the standings, it might be refreshing to them and their fans that they have a player like Tage who can at least give them some ‘wow factor’ moments as he did on Monday night.

Tage Thompson’s 103.7mph goal has a place in history…for now…

NHL Edge was also quick to point out that recently, Tage also recorded a 106.0 mph shot, so there’s a good chance that, when he gets another one to go that fast, he’ll end up breaking his own record. And what’s not to say he won’t surpass the 106.0 mph mark in the process?

Yeah, this will be an interesting one to watch for sure. Even if the Sabres fall out of contention early, watching Tage look to set new milestones with some wicked fast goals that might just reach biblical proportions should keep fans coming into KeyBank Center or following this team on the road.

We’ll see if Tage’s relentless shot speeds continue, but it would be great if they provide enough of a spark for this team to embark on a winning streak that lasts more than three games. Should it occur, then the Sabres might just find themselves on the comeback trail.

Overall, it was an awesome accomplishment on Tage’s part, and I do not envy opposing goaltenders who have to try and stop a shot that reaches well into the triple digits in mph. Tage will get his first chance to break that record on January 9th when the Blue and Gold play the Ottawa Senators.
