The Falcons released their first depth chart ahead of their preseason matchup on Friday against the Lions. The surprises were few and far between, but there are some talking points on the defensive side of the ball, especially when it comes to the younger players.
Everyone in the industry pegged Brandon Dorlus as a steal in last year’s draft. The expectations were a little higher than a typical fourth round pick, only for him to appear in just two games. So, seeing him here listed as a second-team defensive tackle ahead of a veteran free agent signing in Morgan Fox is encouraging. If Brandon Dorlus and Ruke Orhorhoro can become significant contributors in year two, it would be a massive development for Atlanta’s defense.
Rookies typically will not get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the first depth chart of the season. Coaches want to make them earn it throughout the entire process, but the fact that all four Falcons draft picks from the first four rounds are listed on the second team is very telling. James Pearce Jr., Jalon Walker, Xavier Watts, and Billy Bowman are going to see the field a lot this year, and it’s very possible they all end up starting by the end of the season.
This has been a topic of discussion for the entire offseason. The Falcons really need another starting caliber cornerback, or they are setting themselves up for disaster. If A.J. Terrell were to go down, this group would have no chance of stopping anybody. Hell, if Mikes Hughes gets injured, this defense is in trouble. Right now, Dee Alford — who was one of the worst cornerbacks in football last season — is listed as the starting nickel corner. Lamar Jackson (not that Lamar Jackson) hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2022 and is on the second team defense. The Falcons need another cornerback, and if they don’t get one, it could cost them a postseason berth.
