Sometimes the intense swirling of trade rumors just ends up being useless commotion. Early in the offseason, Carolina Hurricanes restricted free agent Martin Necas was the hottest player in the trade market.
Based on the rumors, he was heading everywhere next season except back to Carolina. Now, it’s clear that new Carolina general manager Eric Tulsky is making every effort to retain Necas. With an arbitration hearing looming, Necas has put on a full court press to get him signed.
NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti has plenty of details about what’s happening with Necas.
“We have put everything on the table from one year to eight years,” Tulsky told Gulitti. “So, it’s a question of figuring out whether there’s something that makes sense for both sides.”
Those are not the efforts of a team looking to trade Necas. Talks continue.
“Obviously, both sides would prefer that to going to a hearing,” Tulsky said. “But arbitration creates a mechanism where if we can’t agree on a deal, then a third party settles the deal for us. So, one way or another, it will get settled.

Former Red Wings player Daniel Sprong signed with the Vancouver Canucks Saturday, taking a paycut of more than a $1 million.
With Joe Veleno now signed, the Red Wings have only Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren unsigned.
