Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Balterirra spoke to Dr. Drew Pinsky amid their strained relationship with daughter Carly’s adoptive parents Teresa Davis and Brandon Davis and received an update on the teen.
Teen Mom’s Tyler Baltierra Details Why He and Catelynn Lowell Placed Daughter Carly for Adoption
Catelynn Lowell and Tyler Balterirra are cracking open their closed adoption just a little.
In an exclusive clip from the upcoming May 22 season finale of MTV’s Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, the pair—who placed their daughter Carly, 16, for adoption after her 2009 birth—speak with Dr. Drew Pinsky who is mediating their relationship with Carly’s adoptive parents Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis.
Having addressed that the once open adoption has been slammed shut, Catelynn says in a confessional, “Going into this video session with Dr. Drew I hope that communication can be restored. And I can tell her, “Hey love you. Thinking about you.”
During the video call, Dr. Drew expresses his feelings about Brandon and Teresa cutting off contact with Catelynn and Tyler.
“This whole experience is rather emotional for me, as I’m sure it is for you,” he shared with the couple, also parents to daughters Nova, 10, Vaeda, 6, and Rya, 3. “I can tell you what was expressed to me about Carly. Brandon was like, ‘This kid is thriving. She has friends and she’s athletic and she’s musical. And she’s doing all these wonderful things.’”
It was an update that left Catelynn feeling slighted, with her noting, “Thanks for keeping that beautiful girl from me.”
For Tyler, Brandon and Teresa giving their daughter an amazing life, but keeping them away from it brings up a series of emotions.
“We can never say we’re not grateful to them,” he says. “Both things can be true at the same time. I can be very grateful, and I can also wish you would have been more upfront and honest about what you wanted from this adoption before you took the baby.”
Despite all the turmoil between the two families, Dr. Drew is optimistic there can be a reconciliation.
“In terms of being unblocked and a visit, I don’t see that not happening,” he explains. “It’s just you have to go through the baby steps. But you are encouraged to send gifts for Christmas and birthdays and when gifts are completely appropriate right?”
“It’s not going to be perfect,” he adds. “But what Teresa kept saying was she absolutely wants what you want, and to maintain a relationship. But she feels like she needs kind of a reset. For everybody to calm down and for all of the negativity to kind of settle.”
Before ending their call, Dr. Drew asks Catelynn and Tyler if they wanted to watch a “moving” video of Carly singing in church.
“They recorded a song of hers,” he tells Catelynn and Tyler. “I would love to listen with you because it is so moving. It does kind of feel like Carly’s sending a message of ‘I’m good.’”
The season finale of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter airs Thursday, May 22 at 8 p.m. on MTV.
