Teen Mom stars Catelynn Baltierra (née Lowell) and Tyler Baltierra believe their eldest daughter Carly’s adoptive parents, Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis, may have cut off communication due to “parental insecurity.”
“I truly believe — in my heart of heart — I do not believe that it’s Carly who wants this,” Catelynn, 33, said on her and Tyler’s “Cate & Ty Break It Down” podcast on Wednesday, April 2. “I think it is fear-based.”
Her husband, 33, theorized that Brandon and Teresa have a “parental insecurity” that is preventing them from keeping the lines of communication with Carly, 15, open, as they have always been in the past.
“Yes, I think there’s some infertility trauma because that’s hard not being able to have your own child. That’s hard, and it’s sad,” Catelynn agreed. “Things have gotten more rocky as she’s gotten older.”
Brandon and Teresa adopted Carly after her birth in 2009, as seen on MTV’s 16 and Pregnant. Though Catelynn and Tyler initially agreed to an open adoption with the Davis family, meaning that they could receive photos of Carly and visit with their daughter once a year, they claimed that they had not been in contact with their eldest child for two years.
“She’s asked questions,” Catelynn, who also shares kids Novalee, 10, Vaeda, 6, and Rya, 3, with Tyler, said of Carly on the podcast. “I’ve been informed of these questions that [Carly’s] asking, and I think it scares them, which I get. When she’s older, she might want everything to do with us and nothing with them.”
Tyler agreed, saying, “And that’s pretty much the main fear that we believe that’s driving everything.”
Catelynn previously claimed in February that Brandon and Teresa had “cut off” communication with them.
“Before communication was cut, I was told Carly was asking her parents, ‘Why can’t we get together more? Why can’t we get together with them for holidays? They would fly here to see me,’” she alleged in her Instagram Stories on February 10. “So in my heart, I don’t feel it’s her wanting this …”
The Teen Mom: The Next Chapter star said that if the couple told her it was Carly who was “not wanting contact,” she would “respect that with all of me.”
“And if her mom and dad called and said it’s what Carly wants, I would be silent,” she continued. “Y’all wouldn’t hear a thing from me again about the situation! Because at the end of the day, SHE is what’s most important.”
During a recent episode of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, an adoption counselor named Dawn suggested to Catelynn and Tyler that their public lives may have played a role in the growing distance with Carly.
“When you put it out on the public platform on social media … people make up their own narrative,” Dawn explained. “A lot of hurt happens when we live our lives out on social media.”
However, the couple said that they have continued to discuss their fight for Carly online so that she knows they tried to stay in contact.
“We always try to put ourselves in [Brandon and Teresa’s] shoes and that’s why we stayed silent for so long,” Tyler said. “I’m trying to understand your perception as her parents, and I get why you have all these fears and stuff but I feel like for you as a parent to allow your insecurity and this fear to trump the best interest of [Carly] doesn’t make sense to me.”
