Veteran defensive end Jerry Hughes believes he still has some gas left in the tank. Hughes has inked a new one-year deal to reunite with the Houston Texans and return for his 15th NFL season.
The Texans didn’t announce the move publicly, but it came up on the NFL’s transactions wire. The details of the agreement remain under wraps.
Hughes initially signed with the Texans ahead of the 2022 NFL season on a two-year, $10 million contract with $5.5 million guaranteed money. At the time, it was believed that he would be a depth piece and veteran presence on a roster, considering his dip in form in previous years.
However, Hughes ended up having a bounce-back campaign with Houston in 2022. He started 16 games, amassing 9.0 sacks, his most since 2014, while also adding 35 tackles, two forced fumbles, and an interception. He ended up taking a backup role last season, making only two starts, but still managed to get three sacks and 32 tackles.
Hughes, who entered the league in 2010 as a first-round selection by the Indianapolis Colts, previously had a nine-season-long stint with the Buffalo Bills. He has 70.0 career sacks to go with 479 tackles, 19 forced fumbles, 21 pass deflections, and two defensive touchdowns.
