Thanos' Avengers 6 Return Chances Addressed By Josh Brolin: "I'm Not Kidding"

Marvel Cinematic Universe star Josh Brolin looks at the possibility of reprising the Thanos role in Avengers: Secret Wars. With 2024 starting to wrap up, it's clear 2025 is going to be a crucial year for The Multiverse Saga, as The Fantastic Four: First Steps marks the beginning of Phase 6 and the final phase of the ongoing storyline. With Phase 6 on the horizon, the MCU will be getting closer to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with the Russo brothers set to direct both installments.

Avengers: Endgame Actor Josh Brolin AKA Thanos Issues Public Apology, Here's What Went Wrong

In a new interview with Collider, Brolin was asked if he was interested in revisiting Thanos for Avengers: Secret Wars as The Multiverse Saga nears its end. While the Avengers veteran said he'd be more than open to coming back, he also mentioned it would have to be under the right circumstances, as he stated the following:

I’m not kidding — There’s a thing with playing Thanos. It’s like, ‘Oh, they’re gonna bring Thanos back.’ It’s like Sicario; it has to be right. It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift and we should be talking about Deadpool 4. But we go back and forth. Again, it’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back. I would do anything that the Russos wanted me to do.

What Josh Brolin's Thanos Comments May Mean For Avengers: Secret Wars

Thanos turning to dust in Avengers Endgame

Based on Brolin's comments alone, it seems likely that he hasn't gotten an offer at this point for Avengers: Secret Wars unless he has to keep it a secret. It wouldn't be the first time an MCU actor has had to keep their return under wraps, as the NDAs involved in these projects ensure the public remains unaware until Marvel Studios and Disney make the announcement themselves. But given that the Avengers: Secret Wars cast has barely been put together yet, it may be way too early for Marvel Studios and Brolin to discuss a comeback.

For the time being, it has only been confirmed that the Avengers: Doomsday cast will be filming in 2025, and it's unclear if Avengers: Secret Wars will be shot back-to-back with the first film. If Avengers: Secret Wars is being produced separately, that could easily mean that conversations about a prospective Thanos return would happen much later. It's also possible that even if Brolin makes it into Avengers: Secret Wars, that they will keep it as a surprise for the audience so they can experience it in theaters.

Our Take On Josh Brolin's Thanos Comments

Thanos in full armor in Avengers Endgame

As much fun as it would be to see Brolin back as Thanos in the MCU timeline, it would have to be a variant version of the character in order to maintain the ending of Avengers: Endgame. Having an alternative incarnation of Thanos would also fit The Multiverse Saga, allowing the storytellers to explore other opportunities for him in a different universe. But for now, the MCU audience will have to wait and see if Brolin ever gets to play Thanos in Avengers: Secret Wars or any other live-action project.
