The Dirty Truth Behind Chris Kreider's Trade From New York Leaks Publicly

Chris Kreider was a long-time New York Ranger, but now, it's been revealed that he was traded simply to give the team a chance to dish out offer sheets.

The New York Rangers have been very active early in the 2025 off-season, naming a new Head Coach in Mike Sullivan while also trading the longest tenured Ranger on the team in Chris Kreider.

In the deal, the Anaheim Ducks took on all of Kreider's contract, which is likely the reason why the return may have been underwhelming to some Rangers fans, and now, we know exactly why that was the priority for General Manager Chris Drury.

According to TSN's Darren Dreger, the move was made with one simple thing in mind, and that was clearing salary cap space for the summer as they potentially look to dish out an offer sheet to one of the many available RFA's in the league.

It's unclear exactly who the Rangers could be targeting, but given that they're looking to get younger after moving Kreider and Jacob Trouba over the last year, it's likely that they'll target the likes of JJ Peterka, Marco Rossi or Matthew Knies.

After last summer, offer sheets have become the talking point of this off-season, with many teams around the league reportedly ready to hand them out to young players, and with the Rangers looking to reset their core after a poor 2024/25 campaign, it makes sense that this is the direction they'll look to go.

Still, it must hurt Kreider and the other veterans on this team that he was simply a salary cap dump so the team can look around the league at potential offer sheet candidates, and while the trade was a long time coming after Kreider struggled to make an impact last season, it's definitely not a fantastic look.
