The Last of Us Season 2 will certainly not be the last of the game's live-action adaptation.
There’s big news for the fans of the live-action adaptation of the Last of Us. HBO has officially greenlit The Last of Us for a third season just ahead of Season 2’s highly anticipated premiere on 13 April. The announcement was made on Max's official X account and later confirmed by co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann in interviews with different outlets.

“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” Druckmann said in a statement today. Druckmann attributed much of the success to Mazin, HBO, and the PlayStation Productions team.
“Thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of The Last of Us!”
According to Mazin, the team approached the second season “with the goal of creating something we could be proud of.” He also mentioned that the results “have exceeded even our most ambitious goals”, once again thanking HBO and the “the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew.”
The Emmy-winning adaptation of Naughty Dog's acclaimed PlayStation franchise has captivated viewers with its gritty, emotional storytelling, and fans can now look forward to the next chapter even before the second season airs.
Season 2 aims high with an expanded cast and story
HBO’s Head of Drama and Films, Francesca Orsi, praised the upcoming second season as an “outstanding achievement,” saying the follow-up builds powerfully on the foundation laid by Season 1. She highlighted the work of Craig, Neil, Carolyn Strauss and the full creative team, and said HBO is eager to see their storytelling continue into Season 3.
Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season. Joel and Ellie are both changed, and the world around them has grown even more volatile and unpredictable. Alongside Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, returning cast members include Gabriel Luna and Rutina Wesley. They’re joined by new faces such as Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Young Mazino, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Danny Ramirez and Jeffrey Wright. Catherine O’Hara is also confirmed as a guest star.
The Last of Us continues to be helmed by Mazin and Druckmann, who serve as writers and executive producers. It remains a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and includes executive producers Carolyn Strauss, Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan and Evan Wells. Halley Gross also returns as writer and co-executive producer. The series is produced by PlayStation Productions, Word Games, Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog.
