The Last of Us fan created a cool cake that looked like it was covered in Cordyceps. Originally released in 2013, The Last of Us has received many accolades for its immersive storytelling and action-packed gameplay. Its popularity reached new heights after HBO premiered the TV adaptation starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

The Last of Us redefined the dystopian genre with its own take on zombie-like humans collectively known as Infected, who have transformed into bloodthirsty cannibals and monsters due to the Cordyceps brain infection. The Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus that originated from contaminated crops, causing the downfall of mankind in The Last of Us. It's usually shown as a clump of mushroom-like growths on infected humans and on various surfaces in the game's world.

Although terrifying, The Last of Us' Cordyceps-infected humans have inspired many fans to create art based on them. Reddit user pinetreesandcake recently shared a commissioned The Last of Us cake they made that had awesome Cordyceps details made out of buttercream. The cake was mostly white, which made the orange Cordyceps details, including the mushroom-like growths on the sides, stand out more. They also topped the cake with an icing sketch of Joel's broken wristwatch.

The Last of Us Cake Inspired By Cordyceps

In the comment section, many The Last of Us fans praised the Cordyceps-inspired cake, saying that they wanted one of their own. The baker also joked that the cake made them go "yikes" due to its realistic details, and wondered if anyone was able to eat it with no worries. This isn't the first time someone made a cake inspired by the game's main antagonist — previously, a The Last of Us fan made a disturbing Clicker cake.

The Infected in The Last of Us appear in various forms depending on their level of exposure to the Cordyceps fungus. There are currently six known stages of infection across the franchise: Runners, Stalkers, Clickers, Bloaters, Shamblers, and Rat King. It's possible that more stages might be introduced in the rumored third installment of the game.

  • Runner (recently infected)
  • Stalkers (infected between two weeks to a year)
  • Clicker (infected at least one year)
  • Bloater (infected for several years)
  • Shambler (infected for several years and thrives in water)
  • Rat King (infected for over 20 years)

The Last of Us continues to capture the hearts of fans after Naughty Dog released the first game on PC, while HBO teased that The Last of Us 2's series adaptation is set to premiere next year. The latter may also be teasing a possible The Last of Us 2 PC port to make the sequel accessible to more people, especially those who haven't played it.
