The Last Of Us fans slam 2027 release window

Fans are equal parts sad and furious over the latest update to HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us, which points to the third season not emerging until 2027.

It could even be the final season if rumours are to be believed, and that just doesn’t sit well with fans of the PlayStation franchise.

The boss of HBO, Casey Bloys, has made comments stating that the third season won’t debut until 2027 in an interview with Variety.

Given the lacklustre reception to the show’s second season - a season so boring I gave up watching it - having to wait for the show to possibly redeem itself with the third outing is painful.

Over on Reddit, fans are expressing their frustration as only they can.

The Last Of Us Season 3 Release Window Confirmed

“These long breaks are just insane,” commented one fan, who highlights a general annoyance that there are too many long gaps between seasons of TV shows nowadays.

This is echoed by Lucky_Chaarmss, who comments, “2027? They'll lose viewers just because of the wait.”

In reply, superindianslug notes, “It was 'renewed' before the first episode of Season 2 aired. There was never a chance they weren't gonna finish the story, so they should have planned and shot the seasons back to back.”

They make a good point, why not just film them together to save time, and keep the cast in their roles, unless they had no idea how to finish the show.

“Considering how many people fell off this season, I'd suspect it will be the last,” said Hanekawasenpai.

Another fan of the game mentions the choices the creative team took with the character of Ellie, saying, “It's sad. Season 1 was really good in a lot of ways [...] But they really butchered Ellie's core character arc, which is really essential to a retelling of Pt 2.”
