Details about The Last of Us season 2 finale are coming into focus.
It's only been five weeks, but the second season of The Last of Us is nearly over. According to HBO's official schedule, this upcoming Sunday's new episode — the second-to-last for the season — will run for one hour and eight minutes, the longest of any episode this year. The most recent episode, "Feel Her Love," was the shortest at 45 minutes.
Looking ahead, we can also see how long the as-yet untitled season 2 finale will be: 55 minutes. That makes it longer than "Feel Her Love" and "Day One," the fourth episode of the season, but shorter than the other four.
Does all this quibbling about length matter much? Not particularly. If the episode is good, the episode is good; the length doesn't make much of a difference. The season 1 finale of The Last of Us, "Look for the Light," is the shortest episode of the whole show at 44 minutes, and it was a banger.
Still, it's interesting to look at how episode lengths compare across the seasons. Here's the full list for your curisoity:
- Season 1, Episode 1, "When You're Lost in the Darkness": 81 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 2, "Infected": 53 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 3, "Long, Long Time": 76 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 4, "Please Hold to My Hand": 45 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 5, "Endure and Survive": 59 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 6, "Kin": 59 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 7, "Left Behind": 55 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 8, "When We Are In Need": 51 minutes
- Season 1, Episode 9, "Look for the Light": 44 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 1, "Future Days": 61 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 2, "Through the Valley": 57 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 3, "The Path": 56 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 4, "Day One": 53 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 5, "Feel Her Love": 45 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 6: 68 minutes
- Season 2, Episode 7: 55 minutes
At 81 minutes long, the series premiere is the longest episode in the series to date, although to be fair, that one was originally intended to be two episodes; they got mashed together in the final cut.
I just said that it doesn't matter how long an episode is so long as it's good, and I basically believe that...but on the other hand, in an age where fans need to wait years between new seasons of their favorite shows, I understand how this kind of thing could be annoying. HBO has already renewed The Last of Us for a third season, but filming may not start until next year, which means season 3 may not air until 2028. If we have to wait that long for a short suite of episodes, we'd at least like them to be jumbo-sized.
But back on the first hand, if the season 2 finale knocks our socks off, much will be forgiven. We'll find out soon enough.
