HBO has officially released a new trailer for The Last of Us Season 2, offering a deeper look at the upcoming storyline and the dangerous challenges awaiting protagonists Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey).
The post-apocalyptic series, based on the critically acclaimed video game franchise, takes place in a world ravaged by the Cordyceps fungal infection. Civilization has crumbled, and the remaining survivors are scattered across small, isolated communities, constantly under threat from infected creatures. Season 2 picks up in Jackson, Wyoming, following the shocking events of the first season. Joel, having brutally eliminated the Fireflies to save Ellie, has kept the truth from her—that they intended to sacrifice her in an attempt to develop a cure.
As the trailer suggests, the emotional core of the show remains the evolving relationship between Joel and Ellie. The footage briefly showcases their peaceful new life in Jackson—Ellie dancing with Dina, Joel teaching a young child how to read a map—before quickly shifting to a darker, more ominous tone. When Joel asks about what lies beyond the town’s walls, he receives a chilling answer: “Monsters.”
From there, the action intensifies. Ellie is seen cautiously exploring a dangerous, abandoned location, a Clicker emerges from beneath a thick layer of snow, and a massive horde of infected invades Jackson, threatening to shatter the fragile sense of safety Joel and Ellie have found. The trailer also introduces several new characters who will play key roles in Season 2, including Dina (Isabela Merced), Abby (Kaitlyn Dever)—a vengeful Firefly haunted by Joel’s past actions—Jesse (Young Mazino), Dina’s ex-boyfriend, and Nora (Tati Gabrielle), a doctor. Additionally, Jeffrey Wright returns as Isaac Dixon, Danny Ramirez joins as Manny, and Catherine O’Hara plays an unnamed therapist.
Despite the intense action and new character reveals, the trailer remains focused on the emotional bond between Joel and Ellie. However, the mirrored opening and closing scenes hint that their relationship is heading toward a breaking point. Their deep connection, built throughout the first season, has been the heart of the series and a major reason for its success. But if the show follows the storyline of The Last of Us Part II, that connection will be put to the ultimate test—one that could lead to devastating consequences, leaving fans emotionally shattered.
The Last of Us Season 2 premieres on April 13.
