Just two episodes into the second season, The Last of Us has changed the game. On Easter Sunday, April 20, the hit series delivered a shocking blow—and a shockingly violent death—that shook viewers who aren’t familiar with the game upon which the series is based.
While the season began with a lot of tension between Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), the bond between the two survivors was still evident, and we assumed they’d eventually find their way back to each other. Especially given the seeming safety of the Jackson settlement they had apparently helped to build. But The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2 “Through the Valley” taught us that danger is never too far behind—and can come from unexpected places.
So where do we go now that the entire framework of the series has been broken? That’s what we’ll find out this weekend when The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3 airs. No spoilers ahead.
What is the Release Date for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3?
HBO has yet to reveal the title of The Last of Us Season 2, Season 3, perhaps worried that it might give too much of the plot line away. While we may not know the title, we do know that it will arrive on Max on Sunday, April 27, 2025. It will mark the third of seven total episodes, which is two fewer episodes than Season 1. New episodes will drop every Sunday, and the Season 2 finale will air on May 25, 2025.
What Time Does The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3 Drop?
HBO series that stream on Max as well typically drop at the same time at night rather than at midnight, as some other streamers like to do. The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3 will begin streaming on Max at 9 p.m. EST and 6 p.m. PST—the Sunday night time slot previously held by The White Lotus Season 3, and which HBO tends to reserve for its “prestige-iest” of its prestige series.
What is the Plot of The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3?
While we don’t have a title of The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3, we do have a preview trailer. A sparse one to be sure, but it’s there (and you can watch it below). As might be expected, the bulk of what it shows us is the emotional fallout from the events of the previous episode, “Through the Valley.” More specifically: we see Ellie grieving the loss of the only father she has ever known—and preparing to do something about it.
Much like Abby, Kaitlyn Dever’s character who only joined the show this season, Ellie is an angry young woman with vengeance on her mind. And if we’ve learned anything about Ramsey’s character over the course of 11 episodes, it’s that she cannot be easily talked down from an idea that springs into her head. So just as we previously knew that Joel had better watch his back, now it’s Abby who needs to be careful.
As for the rest of the characters: the breach by the infected created a huge mess for the community to clean up, and the deaths of many of Jackson’s residents. How they’ll work to prevent another such attack, especially as the Cordyceps-infected humans are getting smarter, remains to be seen.
