What The Last of Us Season 2's Preview Reveals About The New Season

The Season's Marketing Is Replicating Naughty Dog's Own Video Game Promotional Strategy

A red-hued Ellie (Bella Ramsey) points a gun in The Last of Us Season 2

With this new selection of The Last of Us season 2 images, it is clear that HBO is keen on keeping as much of what the new episodes have to offer as close to their chest as possible. The seven new images are all taken from moments either early on in The Last of Us Part 2, the 2020 video game that this season is adapting to screen, or are new additions to the story such as Tommy and Maria's unnamed son.

This promotional strategy is a replication of how Naughty Dog promoted the original video game, where carefully edited footage hid a shocking and somewhat infamous story development that set the tone for the rest of the game. As such, while many existing fans may be well aware of what is to come, newcomers only familiar with the HBO series can avoid spoilers and may still be taken by surprise by the shocking moments.

Our Thoughts On The Last Of Us Season 2's Latest Preview

Joel Can't Outrun His Choices Forever

While there is little doubt that the choice of images for this The Last of Us season 2 preview is carefully selected to hide what is to come, it is also building anticipation for those in the know. After The Last of Us season 1's emotional ending left viewers somewhat conflicted, but also satisfied to see this new family survive in a new home, the sequel's story is a tale of how it is impossible to outrun the past.

As such, while the preview focuses on Joel and Ellie finding peace in Jackson, the weight of Joel's decision on himself, Ellie, and those left living in the Fireflies' Salt Lake City hospital base are impossible to forget. Especially for those familiar with the original game, this glimpse at familiar and new characters will be overshadowed by the image of Abby's party drawing closer, giving viewers a clear sense of dread going into The Last of Us season 2.
