The Last of Us Season 2 Trailer Sets New Viewership Record for HBO

The Last of Us season 2 trailer has set an HBO record within three days of its release. Following the events of the video game The Last of Us: Part II, the second season of the hit HBO survival series will continue on Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie's (Bella Ramsey) journey in a more dangerous world as they are drawn to conflict between themselves, along with the return of Gabriel Luna as Joel's brother Tommy and Rutnia Wesley as Tommy's wife Marai and many newcomers. The seven-episode series is set to premiere on April 13 on HBO.

Ahead of the new season's premiere, The Last of Us season 2 trailer has already broken an HBO viewership record, per The Wrap's report. Garnering 158 million views across platforms in only three days, the new trailer has become HBO's most-watched trailer for a Max original series within a three-day period and marks a milestone for the series with a 160% improvement from the show's previous trailers.

What The Last Of Us Season 2 Trailer's New Record Means For The Show

Interests For The Last Of Us Continue To Grow

The Last of Us season 2 trailer marks a new height for the show as viewership continues to soar following season 1's upward motion in the audience's interest. In 2023, the series debuted with 4.7 million viewers, trailing House of the Dragon as the second most-watched HBO premiere in a decade. Immediately, episode 2 saw the network's biggest-ever increase by garnering 5.7 million viewers. By episode 9, the series had seen a drastic soar in its audience, closing with 8.2 million viewers, shattering its previous record.

The new trailer's record-shattering viewership indicates that the interest in the series is higher than ever with the expansion of world-building. Previously, showrunner Craig Mazin and creator Neil Druckmann teased a new level of terror and tragedy as the world of the infected continues to evolve. Similarly, the official trailer teases that The Last of Us season 2 will flesh out more of the world with the introduction of new characters, including Isabela Merced's Dina, Kaitlyn Dever's Firefly Abby, Young Mazino's Jesse, Tati Gabrielle's medic Nora, Jeffrey Wright's militia leader Isaac Dixon, Danny Ramirez's soldier Manny, and Catherine O'Hara's therapist.

Our Take On The Last Of Us Season 2 Viewership

The Last Of Us Season 2 Could Attract Even Bigger Viewership

Following the trend, it's likely that The Last of Us season 2 premiere could reach an even bigger number and potentially beat the record set by House of the Dragon as HBO's biggest premiere. With big changes to The Last of Us: Part II's plot and the addition of original characters and storylines, the season 2 trailer teases the new season being more of an expansion of the source material rather than an adaptation, offering something new to look forward to for both TV audiences and game lovers.

While The Last of Us season 3 has yet to be confirmed, the trailer's record-breaking success is certainly a positive sign that serves in favor of the series' renewal. Given that Mazin and Druckmann are already thinking about the big picture for the series to extend beyond season 4 if all goes well, the Pedro Pascal-led series could potentially be long-running.

The Last of Us season 2 premieres on HBO on April 13, followed by weekly episodes every Sunday.
