In addition to starring in Maya, Haggard also created and wrote the six-part series. In the show, Ramsey will star as Maya, the teenage daughter of Haggard’s character, Anna. The duo must leave their London lives and are forced into witness protection with new identities in a small Scottish town. All the while, the pair are being pursued by two hitmen.
Maya is a Dark Comedy With Intense Themes
The new show is described as “atmospheric, darkly comic, aping the warm and humorous style of Haggard’s previous shows.”Haggard is also behind Back to Back and the FX comedy Breeders. The themes included in Maya are those of “predatory male behavior, family and love, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her daughter.”
Maya was first announced in February as part of Channel 4’s new drama lineup, which will also include a new take on A Woman of Substance, the network’s most-watched drama. The lineup also includes a new series from Jack Thorne, the writer behind the Netflix hit Adolescence. Thorne’s new series is called Falling.
Ramsey is “Excited” for the Titular Role
Production on Maya is set to start later this year and will take place entirely in Scotland. Ramsey commented about the new series, saying, “This story and these characters Daisy has created are so alive, nuanced, wickedly funny, and scarily dark. Every character jumps off the page, the dialogue is incredibly witty, and I’m so excited to get to play Maya opposite Daisy’s Anna.”
Maya marks the second time Ramsey and Haggard have teamed up to play mother and daughter, as the pair did so in the Netflix series Hilda. Haggard said of working with Ramsey again, “Ever since I first dreamt up this show, there has only ever been one Maya. I wrote the part with Bella so clearly in my head, and I honestly still can’t believe they want to be a part of it. Bella is pure magic, just insanely talented, and I can’t wait for us to work together. I’m also thrilled to be taking the leap into directing, and excited to have the opportunity to co-direct the series alongside the brilliant Jamie Donoughue.”

Ramsey was nominated for an Emmy in 2023 for their work as Ellie in The Last of Us. The show recently concluded its second season on HBO. As for the future of Ellie in The Last of Us, series showrunner Craig Mazin said in a previous interview, “All I can say is we haven’t seen the last of Kaitlyn Dever, and we haven’t seen the last of Bella Ramsey, and we haven’t seen the last of Isabela Merced, and we haven’t seen the last of a lot of people who are currently dead in the story.”
