The Yankees have won the first two games in their series against the fading Twins, but there's still an immense panic in the Big Apple that the defending AL Champions are spiraling in the wrong direction.
New York is just 15-15 over their last 30 games, with little chance at making a run for the division while clinging to the final Wild Card spot.
Manager Aaron Boone has been a popular source of fan vitriol over the drop in performance, but it's clear that having prime Joe Torre in the dugout wouldn't dramatically transform this squad's fortunes.
During a recent guest appearance on the New York Post's "The Show" podcast, legendary radio host Chris "Mad Dog" Russo ripped the entire franchise in a passionate monologue.
"Boone has been there for a long time; everyone thinks he's a great guy, but I don't trust him in a big game," Russo said. The Yankees also just aren't that good. Aaron Judge can't do it all by himself. If the Yankees get in [to the playoffs], because I don't trust them. They've played badly for a long period of time."
Later in his rant, Russo also went at the front office for failing to land premium relievers Mason Miller and Jhoan Duran and settling for David Bednar and Camilo Doval.
From the outside looking in, the organization seemingly has no clear direction, thanks to various clashing philosophies and an inability to bolster an above-average lineup around Aaron Judge.
Axing Boone or shuffling some people around at the top of baseball operations won't change the fact that there's simply not enough talent on this roster to be a true contender.
The surprising World Series berth likely caused more long-term harm by propelling the notion that this group was close to winning a title.
