The New Orleans Saints are unpredictable. Even with that in mind, I have decided to make sold bold predictions regarding Kellen Moore's first NFL Draft as the team's head coach.
Check out my full reasoning below.
Saints won't pick a QB at 9
The closer we get, the less it feels like the Saints will pick a quarterback with the ninth overall selection.
Their odds to draft Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, via Draftkings Sportsbook, have plummeted. They are no longer the favorite to pick Sanders and now have +900 odds to pick him.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are now the favorites to draft Sanders via their book at +190 odds. The New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, and Las Vegas Raiders all have better odds than New Orleans there now.
If the Saints want to grab Jaxson Dart as their QB in this year's draft, they won't do it with that top ten pic, either. Instead, they'll hope to select him in round two or move up with their second-round pick to secure him, ahead of some other teams like the Browns or Giants.
Take a TE with one of their first three picks
I believe that Kellen Moore wants another option at the tight end position.
Tyler Warren is absolutely in play in round one, if he is still on the board by the time the Saints pick. Furthermore, there are some intriguing day two options at TE for New Orleans, including Mason Taylor from LSU, Elijah Arroyo from Miami, and Harold Fannin Jr. from Bowling Green.
Grabbing another young talent at that position feels likely for Moore in his first class.
Don't take a defensive lineman until day three
In a surprising decision, the Saints choose to actually wait on adding defensive line talent. I do not see the need for New Orleans to take a defensive lineman in round one, unless maybe Mason Graham falls to them at nine.
They simply have too many needs elsewhere. The glaring QB issue, a thin offensive line unit, a lack of depth when it comes to proven pass catchers, and a cornerback group without much starting experience all loom.
In this year's class, I could absolutely see the Saints waiting until later in the draft to add talent along the trenches for Brandon Staley.
