Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff: Brad Shaw turned down the idea of being an assistant to Rick Tocchet. Shaw was the Philadelphia Flyers’ interim coach after John Tortorella was fired. The Flyers will start an assistant head coaching search this week. Luke Richardson and Mark Recchi are two names that have been out there.
With Tocchet taking over and Tortorella no longer there, more players may be willing to join the Flyers. The Flyers may not be overly aggressive this offseason despite that. Next offseason is when the Flyers will be more aggressive, as dead money will be off the books.
The Flyers will try to add a center this offseason. They have seven picks in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft. Don’t expect them to go big-name hunting with a big salary.
The Flyers did talk to the Minnesota Wild about Marco Rossi during the season, but decided to pass on him. There was concern about how Rossi would play without being beside Kirill Kaprizov and how he would perform in the playoffs.
Could the Philadelphia Flyers be interested in Mitch Marner?
William James of Philly Hockey Now: If Mitch Marner hits free agency on July 1st, should the Philadelphia Flyers be interested? The Flyers may not have been thinking of a big free agent signing this offseason, but what if they could add someone of Marner’s talents? He’s a complete player.
A knock on Marner has been his playoff performances, but he’s posted 63 points in 70 playoff games. He put up two goals and 11 assists in 13 playoff games this season.
Timing may not make the most sense to sign Marner this offseason, but it’s not very often a player of his calibre becomes available in free agency. Do the Flyers need a right winger, given they already have Travis Konecny and Matvei Michkov? Would they move Michkov to left wing like they did at the end of the season? Marner was a center in junior.
