‘The Pitt’ Star, 49, Praises His “Joyful” Time on ‘Chicago P.D.’ Season 12

Chicago P.D. Season 12 cranked up the heat for Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) with the introduction of a new antagonist to handle. To help fulfill that role, in came Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, played by Shawn Hatosy.

The Pitt' Star, 49, Praises His “Joyful” Time on 'Chicago P.D.' Season 12

A cunning and calculated operator, Reid is a dirty cop who blackmails colleagues into doing his bidding and, for much of Season 12, he had Voight and his Intelligence Unit on the ropes. However, the strings of the puppet master were snapped when, in the Season 12 finale, Voight sanctions a hit on Reid with Reid shot and killed by Rennie Otero. The war between Voight and Reid was a drawn-out, protracted conflict, which could still have ramifications for Voight and his team when the show returns in the fall.

Voight's decision to orchestrate Reid's murder ultimately has him coloring outside the lines far more than he normally would. His decision is questioned by the sergeant's love interest, Nina Chapman (Sara Bues), and while Reid might be gone, his impact will most likely linger for a while. While speaking with Deadline, Hatosy looked back on playing the deputy police chief and working alongside Beghe. “It was just nice to be there alongside [Jason Beghe], trying to annoy him, because he’s got this unmoving face,” he teased with a laugh. “No, we had a lot of fun. I was really excited to share scenes with him, and seeing how somebody who’s been playing a character for that long is still excited about the process, working hard, and figuring out how to make it real. It was a joy,” he concluded.

Deputy Chief Charlie Reid Might Continue to Influence 'Chicago P.D.' In Season 13

Chicago PD Cast

Chicago P.D. will continue next season without Hatosy, but his tentacles have already proved to be quite far-reaching. Prior to his death, Reid was on quite the rampage. He had Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) staring down the prospect of being fired and the Intelligence Unit being disbanded. The deputy chief also instituted an internal affairs investigation into Voight's unit in hopes of taking him down. While Voight might have gotten to him first, that IA investigation might not go away so easily, and according to showrunner Gwen Sigan, Voight might regret his actions in the future. "It's one of those things that is going to haunt him a little bit. And we've seen that he's become a bit more self-reflective, whether he wants to admit that or not," the showrunner said.

Chicago P.D. has been renewed for Season 13 and is expected to premiere this fall in the 2025-2026 TV season. It's still too early to know exactly how things might play out, but in a surprising off-season update, it has been announced that Toya Turner, who played the newest recruit Kiana Cook, would be departing the show. While he might not be returning for Season 13 of the police procedural drama, Hatosy will be back on television soon. The actor will return for Season 2 of the HBO Max medical drama, The Pitt, which is currently in production. Hatosy plays Dr. Jack Abbot on the show which is poised for a January 2026 return.
