The Rangers Have Had Contract Discussions With Zac Jones
With Zac Jones set to become a restricted free agent this offseason, what does the future hold for the young defenseman?
According to Mollie Walker of The New York Post, the Rangers have had contract discussions with Jones.
For the past two seasons, Jones has been in and out of the Rangers’ lineup as he hasn’t really carved out an everyday role with the Blueshirts.
During the 2023-24 campaign, Jones played in just 31 games and he followed that up by playing in 45 games this past season.
The 24-year-old’s frustration reached a boiling point in January when he proclaimed to the media he was “rotting away” with the Rangers.
“It (expletive) sucks, it (expletive) sucks,” Jones told Larry Brooks of the New York Post in January. “It’s frustrating when you think you’re doing some things well, and it’s just, you just keep getting taken out, taken out, taken out. I just feel like I’m rotting away a little bit.”
When talking about his future during his exit interview, Jones was very noncommittal when talking about signing a contract extension with the Rangers.
“Whatever happens this summer with contracts whether I’m here or somewhere else, I’m going to give my best,” Jones said. “I’d love to be here and I love the New York Rangers organization. We’ll see what happens this summer. I’m not focused on a role or anything like that, kind of focusing on myself this summer and working on things I need to improve on.”
It’s unclear how contract negotiations have been going thus far between Jones and the Rangers and if talks have progressed.
