There’s more speculation picking up steam that the New York Rangers will not trade Mika Zibanejad this offseason.
Despite Zibanejad being the subject of some trade rumors, his no-move clause put into question the legitimacy if he can even be traded.
The ball is in Zibanejad’s court and the Rangers reportedly have not even approached the veteran forward about the possibility of a potential move.
“Obviously there’s been a lot of news, conjecture, and speculation around him,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said of Zibanejad. “I poked around and this is what I can tell you, he has not been asked to submit teams or waive (his no-move clause). Remember, he has control over this. He has the no-move clause, nothing could happen without Zibanejad’s control or approval. He has not been asked to submit teams or waive.”
Friedman pointed toward Zibanejad’s short success playing alongside J.T. Miller last season as a point of enthusiasm and something to build upon.
Furthermore, Mike Sullivan went to Sweden in order to meet with Zibanejad, proving that the Rangers have the veteran forward as part of their future plans.
“His (Zibanejad’s) wife said on Instagram the other day that Mike Sullivan had flown out there to Sweden to meet with him,” Friedman said. “That doesn't happen unless that is the initial goal here. Sullivan wouldn’t take all that time, the Rangers wouldn’t send him out there if their goal was to get rid of the player.”
The 32-year-old is coming off of a season where he recorded 20 goals, 42 assists, and 62 points in 82 games while averaging 18:46 minutes.
