The Sabres trading for this All-Star caliber defenseman could make their defense elite

The Islanders are taking calls on defenseman Noah Dobson. Could the Sabres cash in and trade for the young defenseman?

The New York Islanders are taking calls on 25-year-old defenseman Noah Dobson, and I think the Sabres should take a shot at him. Any NHL team could use a 25-year-old, right-shot defenseman with a 70-point season.

Dobson is one of the up-and-coming young offensive defensemen in the game. He has scored 10+ goals in four consecutive seasons, is an above-average shot blocker, and can play more than 20 minutes per night.

Dobson is a restricted free agent, and his agent is seeking a contract worth anywhere between $9 million and $ 11 million per year. With Bowen Byram possibly on his way out of Buffalo, and Michael Kesselring not in. Dobson could be a perfect replacement.

The Sabres have been stocking talent for years now, but they can only break so many young forwards into the lineup between Zach Benson and Isak Rosen, and Jiri Kulich, just to name a few.

With how good their prospect pool is, the Sabres should be willing to give up some of their talent to sign Dobson to a long-term contract. One of their young forwards, such as Benson, Rosen, or even Noah Ostlund, the Sabres would also throw in Mattias Samuelsson to let go of more salary.

The Sabres desperately need some talent on the right side of the ice defensively to help out both Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. The options on the right side aren’t bad, but they aren’t great, considering they might trade or buy out Samuelsson. This is the perfect time to let him go.

With the Islanders missing the playoffs last year and looking to rebuild their roster around the first overall pick, this move would help the Islanders significantly. They get two top 10 picks and can save a lot of salary space by letting Dobson sign with a different team.

As well as a young forward who is or will be NHL-ready with a lot of potential. The Sabres need to make moves this offseason. Trading JJ Peterka was just the tip of the iceberg; not having to pay him is the only upside.

With the uncertainty of Bowen Byram, the Sabres can make a real pitch for Dobson and therefore stack their defense for the upcoming season.
