The shootout is one of the most nerve-racking moments in the NHL. You don't know whether your team will come through or falter in the big moments. It's best to bring some wipes and extra underwear because this might be messy.
For the Vegas Golden Knights, they experienced this on Monday. It was their first shootout of the 2024-25 regular season, where they've been in three other overtime affairs (1-2). So how did the Golden Knights do against the Philadelphia Flyers?
Well, they overcame a 3-0 deficit to win in a shootout, 5-4. It wasn't pretty, specifically with the blue line missing Zach Whitecloud and Alex Pietrangelo. However, that didn't stop the Golden Knights from making the Flyers poop themselves late in the game. They went on a 4-1 run and won the shootout, 1-0.
Jack Eichel continued his push for the Hart Memorial Trophy with a goal and assist. Eichel also added a shootout goal, sealing the win. His linemate, Ivan Barbashev, followed suit with a goal and assist of his own. Pavel Dorofeyev chipped in with a power play goal while Tanner Pearson got the equalizer for the Golden Knights.
On the Flyers side, Morgan Frost got the party started with a first-period goal. He also added an assist on Matvei Michkov's second-period goal, making him one of the key players of the game. Sean Couturier and Emil Andrae also scored for the Flyers.
What's next for the Vegas Golden Knights and Philadelphia Flyers?
The Vegas Golden Knights will wrap up their five-game road trip with a Wednesday contest against the Colorado Avalanche. After that is a return trip to T-Mobile Arena on Friday, where they face the NHL's best team, the Winnipeg Jets.
Meanwhile, the Flyers will hit Nashville to take on the Predators on Wednesday. After that is a Friday night contest against the New York Rangers, who are thinking of trading players even after 25 points to start the season. Hey, it could be worse. You could be the Predators, New York.
For the Golden Knights, that was their third straight road victory. It came at a time where fans suddenly lost hope of a win after a 3-0 start from the Flyers.
"Who would step up?"
"Are we in for another trap game?"
Never fear, dear reader! Jack Eichel is here to save the day. His shootout goal was one of the most effortless goals he's made in his career, too.
Again, Eichel continues solidifying his Hart Trophy case as an NHL player. Even Gary Lawless talked about the forward's legitimacy as the league MVP. Perhaps the statement is valid because the four-time All-Star has 34 points on the season.
Perhaps it'll also get some experts and critics talking, too. Not many people expected the Golden Knights to compete for the Pacific Division this season. Despite numerous injuries to key players such as Alex Pietrangelo and Mark Stone, the group still chugs along, winning games they need to. In turn, they scaring the crap out of their opponents and taking their lunch money.
