The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4 Fate Revealed

Daryl Dixon looking ahead in The Walking Dead Daryl Dixon season 3

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 4 has been confirmed, bringing the spinoff to a close with a larger episode count than ever before. Daryl Dixon season 3 will shake up the story of The Walking Dead sequel, with Daryl and Carol getting stuck in Spain on their way back to America. Season 3 begins September 7, 2025 on AMC.

Now, during The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Daryl Dixon season 4 will be the final season of the show. Daryl and Carol's last adventure will consist of eight episodes as opposed to the usual six per season. Production begins this month in Spain.

Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios, released a statement on the show's final season, praising stars Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride for their lengthy roles in The Walking Dead franchise as a whole:

Across two extraordinary series spanning almost two decades - Norman and Melissa have given life to two of the most iconic characters in the history of television. Daryl and Carol have taken fans on an unforgettable and intensely human journey of challenge, survival, hope and friendship, and the response from fans, from the very first moments of The Walking Dead, has been remarkable. We can’t wait to share the upcoming third season of Daryl this fall and to begin production on this fourth and final season in Spain. Whatever awaits these two beloved characters, we know The Walking Dead Universe is a timeless franchise that holds endless possibilities for story and characters new and old.

Reedus and McBride also released statements, grateful to fans and for the opportunity to play their characters in the franchise for such a long time. They also hinted at what the future has in store for them as the series comes to a close:

Norman Reedus: Daryl Dixon has been an incredible journey. I thank each and every fan who has joined us on this ride. It’s been a privilege to build this story for these characters, and we have so much gratitude for how it’s been embraced. Your love and support have made every moment worth it. This finale isn’t just an ending; it’s a celebration of what we've all shared together. Keep carrying that love forward – Daryl’s journey is far from over.

Melissa McBride: It has been the thrill of a lifetime to shoot this part of Daryl and Carol’s adventure together in Europe and I keep coming back for more of these two characters. There is still so much story left to tell and so much for the fans to look forward to. I’m going to revel in the moments as they come and am excited for the fans to see what we have been working on in these incredible locations.

What Daryl Dixon Season 4's Renewal Means For The Series

The End Is Near For Daryl & Carol's Overseas Adventures

Daryl Dixon season 2 ended by laying the groundwork for the rest of the show, namely Daryl and Carol's attempt to get back home through the UK. However, as the show has already revealed, their plans go awry, landing them in Spain. Given the season 4 announcement, it appears their adventure in the country will be a lengthy one.

The announcement emphasizes season 4 will be the final season, making it the second spinoff of the main show to conclude after The Ones Who Live ended. It also has the same episode count as Dead City season 2, with the extra episodes likely necessary to give the series a proper sendoff. How it will end remains to be seen.

Our Take On Daryl Dixon Season 4 Ending The Spinoff

What Does This Mean For The Walking Dead's Future?

With Daryl Dixon coming to an end, that leaves Dead City as the last remaining series in the franchise. However, that doesn't mean Daryl will be gone for good: chief content officer Scott Gimple has confirmed plans to bring legacy characters back together in the future. It's possible the end of one show means the start of another.

For now, the biggest focus seems to be on finishing The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon with a strong final adventure for Daryl and Carol. Since Spain will remain the setting of season 4, it could mean season 3 will lay the groundwork for how the show definitively concludes.
