The Walking Dead director shares insane new TWD spinoff idea

If you really think The Walking Dead Universe has done it all, think again!

In its 15 years of existence The Walking Dead franchise has accomplished a lot. I think that's fair to say, for the original series ran on AMC for 11 seasons and managed to spawn six spinoffs to carry on its own legacy (one of which ended up running for eight seasons). That's a lot.

The TWD Universe lives on to this day and it continues to explore new territories and try new things. Look no further than the setting of these new spinoffs. Maggie Rhee and Negan have made their way to New York City (and back at least once), while Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier have travelled through France and Greenland (and they're now on their way to London and Spain in their show's third season). That's a lot of travelling considering the main show rarely left those legendary long country roads.

Regardless of how long Dead City and Daryl Dixon carry on for, AMC is continuing to invest in the TWD Universe franchise - and that could mean more, future spinoffs. In fact, one Walking Dead director has a crazy idea for one at the ready... and it's kind of brilliant!

The Walking Dead director Michael Satrazemis recently opened up about his time with the classic franchise in an interview with Comics Bulletin and he took this opportunity to discuss its future, too. When asked about where he'd like to see the TWD Universe go next, he offered up a very unique idea for a spinoff - one that we're sure fans would love to see.

“We haven’t gone to space yet. I’d really love to give that a try. As for cast, I think we’ll have to see who can handle the G-force centrifuge training.”

As brilliantly bonkers an idea as this is, it's not completely unrealistic to imagine that the idea of exploring space hasn't crossed someone's mind in the TWD Universe. After all, if Earth and its resources reach a stage in which they had been depleted, it would actually make total sense to look to other planets for life. The question is: Would the undead also be present outside of the Earth's atmosphere?

The question that humanity has pondered for years is whether there is any life out there, but in this franchise it's likely if there is any death out there. Have the aliens become walkers too? Is the virus that has turned humanity into these flesh-eating monsters that have stalked Rick Grimes and his many survivor friends also capable of existing outside of Earth? Does all life on space become walkers when they perish?

Obviously any show set in space would be expensive to produce, so if The Walking Dead Universe ever wanted to make it happen, it would have to be the right story. One potential, realistic option here could be to tell a story set completely on a ship with a crew that have already died. Could the survivors make it through when being hunted by the undead crew? It certainly would have elements of 1979's classic Alien to it, and it could work extremely well if executed in a solid way.

Satrazemis knows this franchise well, having worked on The Walking DeadFear The Walking DeadTales of the Walking DeadDead City, and The Ones Who Live, so perhaps it's time to let him bring his own idea for a spinoff to life. You know the fans would be invested, that's for sure!

Right now, the franchise is continuing to tell the stories of its original characters in both Daryl Dixon and Dead City (which both have confirmed third seasons on the horizons), but once those particular stories conclude, there will no doubt be further scope to continue the franchise.

Honestly, Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Carol Peletier, Michonne, Maggie Rhee, or Negan in space? Sign us the heck up!
