Courtney Hope, who plays Sally Spectra on The Young and the Restless, reminded viewers last week that memorable moments can be small and quiet. They're no less emotional than some of the more traditional grand scenes soap opera viewers have come to expect.

At Society, Sally ran into her ex, Adam (the always terrific Mark Grossman), the man she was prepared to spend the rest of her life with not that long ago. The couple couldn't make it work, but Hope's compelling performance in her scenes with Grossman was an indicator that the end of a relationship doesn't mean feelings are turned off altogether.

Adam informed Sally that he was back with Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan), and even though Sally's now with Billy (Jason Thompson), Adam's news made an impact on the green-eyed beauty. She took the high road and wished Adam happiness. "We've all moved on," she said. "It's just bittersweet." Sally crossed her arms as if to guard herself from Adam's news about Chelsea.

She went on to elaborate that by bittersweet there were still basic human emotions, random moments of "what if?". (Don't we all think about the "what ifs" in life?) Sally said she was specifically talking about whether or not she had gone to Baltimore when Adam went to see Connor (Judah Mackey). "I've never been able to get right," Sally lamented, beating up on herself a little bit as she is known to do.

"Life is tricky," Sally said. She also gave a nod to her life in Los Angeles and how issues there led her to move to Genoa City. "And it is complicated. And anything can change in one moment. We had a child. We named her."

Little Ava Hope Spectra was denied the chance to live a happy and long life, but her mother will never forget her. Viewers won't forget her and it's important to see that Sally doesn't either.

Sally said the loss of their daughter took them in different directions. "That doesn't mean that I'm not happy," she went on to say.

"We're not each other's person anymore," Sally informed Adam. They've moved on to new lives. But it's clear, in Hope's performance, that there are still a lot of deep feelings.

It's been said that the eyes are the window to the soul. We could see all the emotion of "what might have been" behind Sally's. "I don't want a life different than the one I have," she told Adam. We know by the wistfulness in Sally's voice that she'll never forget the one she had.

She appeared relieved after Adam said he'd drop the topic of Billy. Adam made it clear: He cares for Sally. "I know," she responded, fully aware that Adam was telling her the truth.

At home, Sally informed Billy (Daytime Emmy-winner Jason Thompson) that she'd run into Adam. He could tell that she was trying to hide how she was truly feeling behind her smile. Sally said Adam and Chelsea getting back together is how it was supposed to be.

Relationships come and go on soaps (and in life) but what makes Hope one of the most compelling actresses on soaps is her always playing her character's full history!
