"There May Be Some Cry Cursing": The Last Of Us Creator Predicts "Shell-Shocked" Reactions To Season 2 Ending

Abby Anderson (Kaitlyn Dever) very angry in The Last of Us Season 2 Ep 1

The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin teased what viewers should expect from the ending of season 2. The story of the hit HBO series follows Joel and Ellie, who help each other survive many years after a Cordyceps virus led to most of the world's population turning into zombie-like creatures. After the dramatic ending of season 1, tensions are high between Joel and Ellie. The cast of The Last of Us season 2 includes Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Isabela Merced, Kaitlyn Dever, and Jeffrey Wright.

Even though the highly anticipated sophomore season has just begun, Mazin predicts how audiences will react to the ending of The Last of Us season 2 in an interview with Collider. While he believes people will be excited to see what happens next, he also claims that viewers will be "shell-shocked" and emotional. He stresses how much he loves the video game The Last of Us season 2 is based on, and claims he is excited for viewers to watch the experience unfold. Read Mazin's full quote below:

If they feel the way I feel, they’re going to be a little shell-shocked and they’re also going to feel weirdly excited to see what happens next. It’s not about how much story there is. It’s about whose story it is. So much of what makes the second game and this season and this part of the story fascinating to me is how perspective changes everything.

In a Rashomonic sense, but also just in a very specific sense to these people, these young women, who are going through something so similar, and even in the same space and time but not together, how that unfolds is fascinating to me. But I do know that how I felt at the end of watching all of it, I don’t know what the word in English is, but it pins you back. Well, it pinned me back. I hope it works that way for others. There may be some cry-cursing.

What Mazin's Comments Mean For The Last Of Us Season 2's Ending

The Last Of Us Season 2's Ending Could Be Emotional & Divisive

Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) with his nephew in The Last of Us Season 2 Ep 1

While season 1 of the HBO series adapted the entirety of the first video game, which was released in 2013, season 2 will only adapt some of 2020's The Last of Us Part II. Not only is The Last of Us Part II a much longer game than the first, but it is also much more controversial. While the first game mostly follows Joel and Ellie, season 2 will likely primarily focus on Ellie and the newly introduced Abby, which Mazin alluded to in his comments.

Hopefully the end of The Last of Us season 2 also creates intrigue for the third installment.

In the above comments, Mazin claimed that he loves the journeys that Ellie and Abby go on in the second game. He stressed that their differing perspectives are a crucial part of The Last of Us season 2's story. Therefore, while it is unknown what part of The Last of Us Part II will be the ending point for season 2, it is clear that Ellie and Abby's character arcs will challenge viewers. Perhaps it will make people upset, but hopefully, the end of The Last of Us season 2 also creates intrigue for the third installment.
