They Wouldn’t! Chicago P.D.’s Latest Twist May Spell Bad News For Burzek’s Wedding in the Finale

Chicago P.D. Season 12, Episode 21, “Open Caskett” pits the team against Deputy Chief Reid (Shawn Hatosy), and for now, it looks like Reid has absolutely won. The episode ends with Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) arrested for his inappropriate relationship with a CI, and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) in trouble too for covering for him. Plus, Chief Reid also gets one final twist of the knife; he shuts down the Intelligence unit for good. Where does Chicago P.D. go from here? Is this the end of Intelligence?

The answer to the question seems to be yes, but don’t count Voight’s team out. Or, better yet, don’t count Hank Voight out. We already know he’s the kind of man who will do whatever to protect his team, and times have rarely been as desperate as they are right now. So, when things get desperate, so does Voight. And wasn’t Reid who told him they were the same? He should be concerned about the fact that he’s now backed Voight into a corner.

Because that’s what he has effectively done. The team spends all episode trying to get evidence that Reid is dirty, but Reid is somehow always two steps ahead of them. At the end of an hour that started with ASA Nina Chapman (Sara Bues) sleeping over on Voight’s couch and chatting casually with him about his dead wife Camille, we see her knock on his door, telling him they can still fix things. But Voight isn’t answering anymore.

Knowing Voight, that doesn’t mean he’s given up. Instead, it probably means that he’s done playing by ASA Chapman’s rules, or anyone. In fact, knowing Voight, he’s likely to believe that if Reid “won” this battle by being dirty, he can win the war by being even dirtier.

Ironically, the Chicago P.D. Season 12 finale was also set to feature Kim and Adam’s marriage, but as things stand, it does look like they’ll have to at least postpone their wedding. Hopefully only until the end of the episode to make sure Voight’s got his guy and has managed to clear Intelligence. The one good thing going for Voight and the team? Reid isn’t just a little bit dirty, he’s very dirty. So once they find the right closet, there’s bound to be many, many bodies hidden. It’s just a matter of finding the right door.

We’ve seen Voight go rogue before, but the finale is setting him up to not just do that again, but to do so alone. For all his faults, and he’s got many, Voight cares about his team. He clearly cares about Nina Chapman. And that means he won’t want any of them involved in whatever “the means justify the ends” stuff he’s willing to do to get Reid.

A dark Voight taking on Deputy Chief Reid? Sounds like the perfect finale for Season 12 of Chicago P.D. Hopefully, as the team is doing that, we get Kiana Cook (Toya Turner), who was also missing from this episode, back. Intelligence is going to need all hands on deck if it’s going to manage to take down the Deputy Chief of the Chicago Police Department.

Chicago P.D. is available to stream on Peacock.
