Former Falcons great Terance Mathis was recently inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall Of Fame.
During his NFL playing career, Mathis recorded 689 receptions, 63 touchdowns, and just over 8,800 yards receiving. He was known as an "Iron Man" of sorts, only missing two games in the 1995 season during a career that spanned from 1990-2002. That's pretty spectacular for a utility player.
His best years came as a member of the Atlanta Falcons. He spent eight seasons (1994-2001) with the team and was as productive as anyone. He exceeded 1,000 yards receiving on four different occasions and was an excellent return man on the special teams side of the football.
The Atlanta Falcons needed a weapon in 1994, and they were able to grab him from the New York Jets that same year. The Jets selected Mathis in the sixth round of the 1990 NFL Draft.
To this day, Mathis is third all-time on the Falcons touchdown list behind Roddy White and Julio Jones.
It was essential to the Georgia Sports Hall Of Fame to induct Mathis from going to high school in Georgia, having a great career in New Mexico in college, and then having it all come full circle for him to be such an icon in the eyes of Falcons fans during his eight seasons with the team.
Since his retirement in 2002, having spent his last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mathis has continued to give back to the game of football. He was named offensive coordinator for Savannah State University in 2011, spent some time with Pinecrest Academy and was named head coach of Morehouse College in February 2024.
Terance Mathis will continue to build upon his legacy within the coaching ranks, showing the younger generation what it takes to be successful in future endeavors.
