Star Trek: Section 31 was the first Star Trek movie to go straight to streaming and not get a theatrical release. It was also the first film overall since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. The movie, in addition to Yeoh, also stars Omari Hardwick, Sam Richardson, Robert Kazinsky, Stacy Rohl, and Sven Ruygrok. The Paramount+ exclusive film stars Yeoh as Philippa Georgiou, who runs a nightclub called the Baraam is then tapped to join Section 31, a covert black-ops division of Starfleet.
Is it Worse than Star Trek V?
Although it’s rising on the streaming charts, Section 31 has a franchise low 20% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 16% audience score on the review aggregator based on more than 1,000 reviews. In comparison, the widely panned Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989) has a 22% critic and 25% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek has the honor of being the best-reviewed Trek film on Rotten Tomatoes with a 94% critic and 91% audience score.
Yeoh Was Nominated for her Performance
Yeoh, who won an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once, was the only actor from a Star Trek show or movie to receive a 2025 Critics Choice Super Award nomination. Yeoh is nominated for Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Series, Limited Series or Made-for-TV Movie at the fifth annual Critics Choice Super Awards.
Yeoh’s category is stacked and includes Adria Arjona (Andor), Caitriona Balfe (Outlander), Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along), Britt Lower (Severance), and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror). The winners of the Critics' Choice Super Awards will be announced on August 7 on CriticsChoice.com.
When Section 31 was first released in January 2025, despite its bad reviews, it managed to crack the Nielsen Top 10 during its first week on Paramount+. The film, in its debut week, held the No. 8 spot with 170 million minutes streamed.

One Section 31 Star Was Concerned About How Fans Would Receive the Movie
“It was, I think, the one time of my life where my dream came true with zero disappointments,” he added.
Ahead of the release, Kazinsky said of Section 31, “I’m terrified of how it’s going to be received because it’s not the Trek people want. The Trek that people want, the Trek that we all want, is just 1,000 more episodes of TNG,” Kazinsky said.
"Everyone’s always furious that they’re not getting more TNG, whilst at the same time, when TNG came out, everybody hated it. So, this is going to come along, and it’s not going to feel like any Trek that they’ve ever seen,” he added.
