Poor Detroit and New York, two teams that had so much potential going into the season are suddenly out of the playoff picture. Could a trade fix their issues?
It seems fairly apparent by now that New York Rangers GM Chris Drury will be a seller leading up to the March 7 trade deadline.
A month after moving captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and winger Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken, the latest name who could be on the move from Broadway might just be a defenseman.
As noted by Remy Mastey of The Hockey News via Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli, Ryan Lindgren could be a fit for the Detroit Red Wings as they aim to fortify their back end during their push for a playoff position under new head coach Todd McLellan.
"I wonder about Detroit. Is he that big of an upgrade, though? That's the question I'd have to ask," Seravalli said. "And I don't know how big the Red Wings are gonna spend."
In a position to become an unrestricted free agent following this season, the future of Lindgren in New York is cloudy enough to make him front and center in the trade murmur mill.
The Rangers are on the outside of a playoff wild-card spot at this juncture, and short of a drastic turn in their fate, Drury could lean further into the future-building moves.
This season, Lindgren has recorded two goals, eight assists and 10 points in 37 games, averaging 19 minutes and 51 seconds per game while carrying a -4 rating. His cost-effective contract and reliability could make him Detroit's darling.
Barring a rallying cry from the Rangers, it's expected that Drury will remain a seller at the deadline, and Lindgren will be one of the pieces dealt.
