The Philadelphia Flyers will have three players representing Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship this month.
This year’s World Championship will be co-hosted by Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark. Team Canada is in Group A, which plays in Stockholm, and gets its tournament underway on May 10 against Slovenia.
The championship and third-place games are set for May 25 at Avicii Arena in Stockholm.
Travis Konecny and Travis Sanheim had already been reported as likely to play for Team Canada after also playing at the 4 Nations Face-Off, but Tyson Foerster joining them is a bit of a surprise.
Konecny played two games with Team Canada during the 4 Nations Face-Off, averaging 11:16 time on ice with two shots on goal and no points. He previously represented his country at the U17, U18, and U20 levels as well as the 2017 World Championship, putting up eight assists in 10 games as Canada finished as the runner-up.
Sanheim, however, took on a bigger role due to injuries at the 4 Nations, playing 17:22 per game with an assist and three shots on goal. He too represented Canada at the U18 and U20 levels and was also a member of the runner-up squad in 2022 at the World Championships with four points in 10 games.
This will be just the second time that Foerster has played for Team Canada at the international level. He had six points (three goals, three assists) in seven games as Canada took home the gold. The 23-year-old forward finished the season strong with 9 goals in his final 11 games for 25 goals and 43 points on the year.
Foerster getting an opportunity to play with some of his country’s best players can only be a good thing. Guys like Ryan O’Reilly, Adam Fantilli, Bo Horvat, and Macklin Celebrini headline the 15 players already named to the roster.
