Alex Pietrangelo suffered a season ending injury in 2024/25, and now, the Golden Knights may look to exploit LTIR again as they figure out his health.
Over the past few years, the Long Term Injured Reserve rule has been exploited by many teams in the NHL, and while it's been addressed by Commissioner Gary Bettman, no rule changes surrounding this can be made until the newest CBA, which will be agreed upon leading into the 2026/27 season.
Until then, teams are likely free to exploit the rules, and according to Elliotte Friedman's latest report, the Vegas Golden Knights could be preparing to do just that next season.

On the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman revealed that the Golden Knights will be trying to see what Alex Pietrangelo's health situation is like after battling through a tough 2024/25 campaign.
'I hope he's healthy, I hope he's good enough to go, but it sounds like there is at least the possibility that they are trying to figure out what his health will be like for the start of next season.'
Given how both Vegas and Tampa Bay have exploited the LTIR ruling over the past five years, this is one that would make NHL fans furious, and while it's definitely a long way out, even the fans on social media realize what could happen here.
Ultimately, there's a lot that could happen between now and the start of next season for Vegas, with many expecting them to make a play for Mitch Marner as well, but if Pietrangelo isn't good to go for the start of the year, don't be shocked to see this LTIR situation emerge once again.
