Veterаn Sаfety Juѕtіn Sіmmonѕ Weіgһѕ In On Fаlconѕ QB Mіcһаel Penіx Jr.

Justin Simmons, a veteran safety and two-time Pro Bowler, joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 after a successful stint with the Denver Broncos. However, his first season with the Falcons was disappointing, posting a career-low grade and struggling to make an impact on defense.

With only two interceptions and a lower coverage grade, Simmons didn't meet the high expectations set by his previous years. As of Apr. 9, 2025, Simmons remains a free agent, and while his performance last season raised questions, his past success could still make him an appealing option for teams in need of veteran leadership in the secondary.

Simmons Praises Michael Penix Jr.: "The Real Deal"

On the Thursday episode of the Up & Adams show, Simmons discussed his future plans, expressing a desire to find a new team soon to avoid the physical toll of joining training camp late.

"That's always the goal," Simmons told Adams. "I think, yes, there's pros and cons to training camp. Cons is going through it, your body breaking down, the whole nine, especially as you get older. But a lot of the pros is building that rapport, especially when you're not with the team and you haven't necessarily played with a lot of those guys."

Ex-Falcons Safety Justin Simmons Hypes Playing for NFC Foe

Simmons mentioned the Philadelphia Eagles as a potential fit, particularly due to his familiarity with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s system from their time together in Denver. He emphasized that he would know exactly what to expect from the team and vice versa: "Going to Philly with Vic, you know exactly what you're getting out of me and I know exactly what I'm getting out of them because I've been in the system. I still have a ways to go to mastering it, but there are some things and nuances that I know that (defensive backs coach) Christian Parker likes, and I think I could really help in that area."

When reflecting on his time with the Falcons, Simmons had nothing but praise for  quarterback Michael Penix Jr. "Michael Penix is the real deal," Simmons enthused. "Going up against him in practice, having a chance to compete against him." Simmons also highlighted his positive experience working with safety Jessie Bates III, saying, "Getting a chance to work with Jessie [Bates III] was great. I think [he] has been playing lights out the last couple years."

Simmons' reflections on his time with the Falcons and his praise for Penix show his confidence in the young quarterback's potential. As he seeks a new team, his leadership, experience, and understanding of NFL systems will make him a valuable asset, whether in Philadelphia or elsewhere.
