Vikings can feel better about their biggest question mark heading into the offseason after Monday's practice

The Minnesota Vikings have one of the deepest rosters in the National Football League. Even with their roster in a great spot, they have a somewhat glaring weakness at cornerback.

This offseason, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah didn't prioritize cornerback like we thought he would either in free agency or the NFL Draft. Byron Murphy Jr. was re-signed to a big contract, but the only other notable additions were Isaiah Rodgers and Jeff Okudah. Those aren't awe-inspiring to the fanbase.

With the position group the way it is, the Vikings have been rumored to trade for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey, but if what happened at OTAs on Monday, they might not have to.

Isaiah Rodgers makes big play in OTAs

There are a couple of arguments you can make when it comes to the Vikings' approach to cornerback this offseason:

  • Cornerback is a weak link position
  • Brian Flores believes in the talent they have

Rodgers is the most intriguing of them all, as he was signed to lower-level starter money. It felt in real time that the Vikings were making a move to find an inefficiency in the market due to Rodgers' size and gambling suspension.

In the second week of OTA practices in phase three, Rodgers reportedly picked off J.J. McCarthy and talked about his plus ball skills.

The really interesting thing here with what Rodgers told the media is how many opportunities there are in Flores' defense to get interceptions. His size isn't ideal for the position, but that is workable. What Rodgers has that is extremely important is patience.

Rodgers can attack the ball at any point, and what matters a lot is staying in position. He can do that consistently because of his patience. Rodgers has a knack of staying in the right position consistently and it makes a major difference for his ball production.

Let's also address the elephant in the room. One play in OTAs shouldn't give the Vikings any kind of confirmation bias toward their decision of not making major moves to fortify the cornerback position. However, it's a good first step and that matters.
