Gurira is best known for her roles as Okoye in the MCU and Michonne in The Walking Dead universe.
Actress and playwright Danai Gurira is well known for her portrayal of Michonne in The Walking Dead and its spinoff The Ones Who Live, and as Okoye from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Next, Gurira will appear in an action-adventure comedy, Matchbox, which is based on the popular brand of toys.
In 2024, Deadline announced that Apple Original Films had acquired a new movie that would be directed by Sam Hargrave, known for his collaborations with the Russo Brothers and his directorial debut, the Netflix original Extraction.
His latest film, titled Matchbox, is inspired by Mattel's die-cast toy line, with the screenplay written by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper. The film will be produced by Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger for Skydance, and Robbie Brenner for Mattel Films.
Matchbox cars were originally invented in 1953 by Jack Odell, automotive enthusiast, who challenged himself to creating a toy that could fit into a matchbox, as that was the only sized toy his daughter was allowed to bring to school. Soon, the other students in awe of her toy, demanded one of their own. According to reports, two Matchbox cars are sold every second worldwide.
In Jan. 2025, filming for Matchbox began in Budapest, and Gurira was announced as joining the previously announced cast, including John Cena, Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, Teyonah Parris, Randeep Hooda, and Corey Stoll.
The story follows a group of childhood friends who reunite after 20 years in an action-packed, globetrotting, and heartwarming adventure where they must band together to stop an impending worldwide catastrophe. In the process, they will rekindle their friendships.
