“We Don’t Agree”: ‘Chicago P.D.’ Star Teases Cook’s Intelligence Conflict in Her First CI Case

One element that sets NBC procedural Chicago P.D. apart from its One Chicago counterparts is its more character-centric approach, where each episode focuses more on an individual character of the Intelligence Unit. Early in Season 12, the show introduced a new character, Patrol Officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner), who was soon promoted to the undermanned Intelligence Unit. While the show has gradually developed her character, some viewers have found the pace a bit too slow, eager to see more of Cook’s backstory and personal journey explored in depth. Thankfully, the next episode, "Name Image Likeness," puts Cook in the forefront as she works her first case involving a confidential informant, and actress Toya Turner, who plays the character, has previewed a bit of what to expect from episode 19.

The last time Cook found herself at the center of a high-stakes case was during her first undercover assignment, an operation that nearly ended in disaster when her cover was blown. That mission was complicated by her colleague Torres’ (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) undisclosed past with informant Gloria Perez. Now, this next case will again place her in the thick of a murky investigation. "Cook works with a confidential informant for the first time in a robbery-murder case with links to a star college athlete," the logline reads. In a recent interview with TV Insider, Turner offered a glimpse into Cook’s mindset, explaining that her character “tries to play things close to the vest with her,” revealing the informant is a woman. While Cook initially approaches the situation with professionalism, Turner hints that the lines begin to blur.

“She tries to just make it be about the work, but then it starts to get more personal where she’s willing to put herself on the line for her CI. And of course it doesn’t go well.”

Cook and the Team Face a Dilemma Over How to Handle the Case

A previously released sneak peek reveals that the case revolves around a promising basketball star whose name, image, and likeness are valued at $4 million. That single detail becomes a major complication for the team, as the player’s rising status raises questions about privilege, accountability, and public perception. According to Turner, the situation creates a dilemma within the Intelligence Unit about how to proceed:

We don’t agree on how to approach it. If you have the Steph Curry committing a crime, what do you do? I feel like Cook doesn’t give a damn. I know Platt [Amy Morton] doesn’t give a damn. Voight doesn’t either. “But it seems like Atwater [Laroyce Hawkins] and Ruzek [Patrick John Flueger] had this thing, ‘Well, he’s a basketball legend,’ you know what I mean? So I think it causes us to not be clear on how we want to approach the situation.”

Find out how the team handles the situation when "Name Image Likeness" airs on NBC on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 10/9c.
