What Happens To Dina & [SPOILER] In The Last Of Us

Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Last of Us, the TV show and video game.HBO Max's hit series The Last of Us follows survivors of an epidemic caused by the Cordyceps virus that has turned large amounts of the population into zombie-like creatures. While the first season aligns with the first The Last of Us game and follows the characters Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the United States, the second season picks up five years later. The Last of Us season 2 sees Ellie venturing to new locations, this time with her partner Dina (Isabela Merced). The two young people travel north to Seattle while hunting Abby, The Last of Us season 2's primary villain.

While Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) may be the villain in Ellie's eyes, the game and show highlight how Ellie and Joel are equally villains in Abby's story. As a result, the series creates a very complex view of morality and the effects of revenge. These themes make The Last of Us often quite a heavy show, but some moments, particularly Dina's announcement in season 2, episode 4, add some much-needed levity and romance to the story. Though things are not always smooth sailing for Dina and Ellie from this point forward in The Last of Us' game, Dina's big news changes everything.

Dina Is Spared By Abby In Seattle After Ellie Reveals The Pregnancy

The Pregnancy Marks A Big Moment In Dina And Ellie's Relationship

The Last of Us season 2, episode 4, follows Ellie and Dina during their first day in Seattle. The pair encounter a horde of infected while attempting to escape from WLF soldiers. The tense night finally ends with Ellie admitting to Dina that she is immune, while Dina shares with Ellie that she is pregnant. These two massive reveals on the part of each character allow them to be closer than ever before, but it also means that Dina will have to be even more careful going forward.

Dina's pregnancy reveal plays a huge role in The Last of Us Part II game as well, so the show's audience can expect more story surrounding it in the future. In their coming days in Seattle, Dina and Ellie continue tracking Abby, though in the game they are also attempting to locate Tommy (Gabriel Luna), who had previously gone after Abby as well. Eventually, the group is made up of Tommy, Jesse (Young Mazino), Dina, and Ellie, who all stay in an abandoned theater. When Abby finds them, it turns violent quickly, with Abby killing Jesse and injuring Tommy.

After witnessing Abby's violence against Tommy and Jesse, Dina and Ellie begin fighting with her and one of her companions. Eventually, Abby is able to injure both Ellie and Dina as well, and Abby's companion shoots Dina in the shoulder. Dina is then knocked out by Abby and about to be killed when Ellie says that Dina is pregnant in an attempt to convince Abby to spare her. Though Abby is initially unconvinced by Ellie's pleas, her friend ultimately helps her realize that killing a pregnant woman would not bring her any peace.

Dina Has A Son Named JJ

Dina Names Her Baby For Jesse

Despite all the challenges that Dina and Ellie face while in Seattle, both characters survive the ordeal and Dina safely gives birth to her baby later in the game. Given that Dina was previously in a relationship with Jesse before beginning to date Ellie, it should come as no surprise to audiences that the series has already confirmed that he is the biological father of Dina's baby. As a result, Dina and Ellie decide to name their new son JJ after Jesse.

Because of how much he still cares for Dina and is a friend to Ellie, Jesse follows them to Seattle, but shortly after finding them he is killed by Abby, so JJ's name honors his memory.

Though Dina and Jesse's relationship was somewhat complicated and off and on, the pair did truly care about each other as good friends and Jesse was respectful of Dina's feelings for Ellie. While their positive relationship seems like a good enough reason for Dina and Ellie to want to name their child after Jesse, the real reason is actually much sadder. Because of how much he still cares for Dina and is a friend to Ellie, Jesse follows them to Seattle, but shortly after finding them he is killed by Abby, so JJ's name honors his memory.

Ellie & Dina Raise JJ On A Farm In Wyoming

The Two Have A Chance To Start A Real Family

Dina (Isabela Merced) and Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) very affectionate in The Last of Us Season 2 Ep 4

The Last of Us is not a game that is known for its lightness, but Dina and Ellie's time together on a farm in Wyoming is one of the game's happiest moments. After the birth, Dina and Ellie decide to raise their son on a small farm outside of Jackson, giving them the chance to become a true family. In the game, this time allows them to enjoy peace for the first time in a long time, with the characters cooking, cleaning, and even dancing together, though the anger that Ellie once felt is still simmering below the surface.

The Last of Us season 2 will have seven episodes and cover only part of The Last of Us Part II game.

In addition to Ellie's anger, she also still has PTSD both from witnessing Joel's death and from the lengths that she went to avenge him afterward. These events occur about one year after Ellie and Dina's time in Seattle searching for revenge. While they have a chance to be as truly happy as they could possibly be in their post-apocalyptic world, Ellie's love for Dina and the baby proves not to be enough to overcome her long-ingrained desire to avenge Joel's death, as Tommy appears and convinces her to leave again.

Dina & JJ Disappear From The Farm After Ellie Goes After Abby Again

Ellie's Quest For Vengeance Is Her Downfall

Dina (Isabela Merced) stressed, pointing her gun in The Last of Us Season 2 Ep 4

In The Last of Us Part II, after raising JJ together for almost a year, Tommy arrives at Ellie and Dina's farm to convince them to go after Abby again. While Dina is immediately against it and is angry with Tommy for even suggesting it, Ellie thinks it over and eventually decides to go. Ellie's time searching for Abby is once again very difficult and painful, but when she has the opportunity to kill her, Ellie realizes that it is not what Joel would want her to do. Knowing this, Ellie leaves Abby and her companion and returns to her and Dina's farm.

Ellie notes that Dina and JJ's things have been taken though hers remain untouched, strongly implying that they simply packed and left without Ellie, and did not bother to leave a note.

However, the game ends on a pretty bitter note, as, despite Ellie returning to their farm, she does not find Dina or JJ. The game does not explain what happened to them, though it can be safely assumed that Dina decided to leave Ellie behind, knowing that revenge would always be her biggest motivator. Ellie notes that Dina and JJ's things have been taken though hers remain untouched, strongly implying that they simply packed and left without Ellie, and did not bother to leave a note.

The Last of Us' bleak tone is difficult at times, but it is also a large part of what makes the series so great, and Ellie's lonely ending is the perfect example. Ellie attempts to play her guitar as a reminder of Joel, something that has come up a few times in The Last of Us already, but is unable to with her injured hand. Though Ellie could have changed her former ways and lived a peaceful life with people she loved, she was unable to overcome her own shortcomings, leaving Dina and JJ alone.
