Anora was the big winner of the 2025 Oscars, receiving five out of its six wins including Best Picture, Best Director for Sean Baker and Best Actress for Mikey Madison.
The movie broke Oscars records, created upsets for awards season favourites and generally proved to be the dark horse of the competition. It was a deserving winner after a rather chaotic and surprising road to the Academy Awards, which saw a number of controversies come to light.
But if you have missed all that, and you could easily have done so, then what exactly is Anora? Here is what you need to know.
What is Anora about?
Mikey Madison and Mark Eydelshteyn portray the unlikely romance at the heart of Anora. (Universal Pictures)
Anora follows Anora "Ani" Mikheeva (Madison), a 23-year-old stripper from Brighton Beach who elopes with the son of a Russian oligarch, Ivan "Vanya" Zakharov (Mark Eydelshteyn). When Vanya proposes Ani isn't sure but ultimately agrees to a Las Vegas wedding, she then quits her job and moves in with her new husband in his mansion.
The only problem is Vanya's family aren't too happy with the nuptials, and his mother orders his godfather, Toros (Karren Karagulian), to get an annulment. With Vanya's parents heading to the US to clear things up with their son, henchmen Garnik (Vache Tovmasyan) and Igor (Yura Borisov) are tasked by Toros to get this done before they arrive.
Thus begins the chase for the annulment, with Ani trying to prove that she and Vanya are in love while her new husband runs away from his problems. This leaves Ani, Igor and Garnik left to find him and find a solution to their respective situations.
Where to watch Anora
Anora is available to watch in some cinemas, and viewers can buy or rent it now. (Universal Pictures)
There are currently two ways to watch Anora following its Oscars win, firstly the movie is still showing in some cinemas across the country — namely at Vue, Everyman and Showcase cinema.
For those that don't have a cinema showing the film near them, Anora is available to buy and rent on all digital platforms including on Prime Video, Apple TV and the Sky Store. The movie will become available to stream in the near future, likely landing on Sky Cinema and NOW first as it is a Universal Pictures title in the UK.
It can take up to eight months for a film to land on Sky Cinema after its theatrical debut, so it could become available to stream in July in the UK. However because of its Oscar win there is the chance that it will arrive sooner on the platform.
Anora comes to 4K UHD and Blu-ray for the first time on 5 May, and will also get a Criterion Collection release on the same day.
