The San Francisco 49ers committed their future to Brock Purdy, who has already taken them to one Super Bowl in his first full season as the starting quarterback.
Joe Montana made his feelings on Purdy clear back in February
Joe Montana is the GOAT to many fans of the NFL. He played in an entirely different era to the modern day game, when it was encouraged to destroy the opponents quarterback whenever you got the chance.
Montana, known as Joe Cool, won four Super Bowls with the franchise in the 90s, earning the Super Bowl MVP in three of them. He was the MVP of the league twice, while winning countless other accolades in his career in San Francisco.
The legendary quarterback is the franchise leader in passing yards, touchdowns, and quarterback wins, and his opinion is sacred to 49ers fans.
In early February during Super Bowl week, Rich Eisen asked him what the franchise should do with Brock Purdy:
“You gotta pay him. I could show you four or five guys in the league making tons of money that haven’t produced anywhere near what he’s been able to do.”
He went on to say that the 2024 season was just one of those years that you ‘can’t wait to get behind you.’
Purdy signed his extension this week, putting pen to paper on a five-year, $265 million contract.
A comeback season for the 49ers
It was an uncharacteristic down-year for the 49ers, who finished the season with a 6-11 record, bottom of the NFC West.
They lost Brandon Aiyuk to injury early in the year, while Christian McCaffrey was sidelined for most of the season at running back. Jordan Mason had done a great job stepping into the role, then he went down as well.
In 2025, San Francisco will be hoping to bounce back in a major way. They may have traded Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders, but they’re ready for Ricky Pearsall to take on a larger role in the offense. Aiyuk will be back healthy, and McCaffrey is ready to go again for the new year.
The Niners spent a lot of draft picks on their defensive line, adding Mykel Williams in the first round before picking up Alfred Collins in round two, and CJ West in round four.
When healthy, this team can compete, and their quarterback is now locked in for the long term.
