What to Expect from the NHL's New Amazon Documentary

From The Silky Mitten State: Will the new Amazon documentary starring a medley of NHL superstars actually bring fans something hitherto unseen?

This fall, Amazon and the NHL are teaming up to bring fans a new behind-the-scenes documentary.  The doc will be executed by Box to Box Films, the same production team that created Netflix's Formula One hit Drive to Survive (as well as a variety of spin-offs, including Break Point, Full Swing, and Tour de France: Unchained).

The series will star Connor McDavid, Matthew Tkachuk, Jacob Trouba, Leon Draisaitl, David Pastrnak, Jeremy Swayman, Quinn Hughes, Jack Eichel, William Nylander, Filip Forsberg, and Gabriel Landeskog.  The move makes sense for Amazon, who cut a deal with the NHL to begin broadcasting Monday night games in Canada beginning next season.

On the most recent episode of The Silky Mitten State, my co-host Connor Earegood and I discussed our reactions to the announcement of the show.  We both expressed a general excitement for the show, but we also had a question.

Specifically, we want to know whether this documentary will really bring something NHL fans haven't seen in previous incarnations of behind-the-scenes docs the league has been involved in previously.  Both of us intend to watch this new Amazon flick, but whether it will be decent 'content' to kill time with or something more insightful remains to be seen.

I pointed out that what made Drive to Survive interesting was that it gave people largely unfamiliar with the sport of F1 an inside look at a unique and foreign sport, while also bringing the viewer to gloriously exotic locations all over the globe.  

That's not exactly an option for this show, so how, if at all, will it come across to sports fans who aren't already hockey fans.  Alternatively, what will it give us behind the beats we're already familiar with.
