The Buffalo Sabres have not made the postseason for an NHL record, 14 seasons. It has been even longer since they have won a playoff series. It has been 18 seasons which is currently the longest streak in the league. The record is 24 seasons without a playoff series win set by the Florida Panthers.
The Panthers broke the streak in 2022 and ended up winning the Stanley Cup last season. Hopefully for Sabres faithful, they can have such a turnaround. In the 2006/2007 season, Buffalo won the Presidents Trophy for the best team during the regular season.
They followed that up with winning the first round series four games to one against the New York Islanders. They then followed that up with a series against the New York Rangers.
In the last series that the Sabres have won, they would take it in six games. Ryan Miller was the starting goalie in all six games. Two games in the series would go into overtime.
The pivotal game 5, the Sabres would win 2-1 with the series tied at two games even. Miller would have 22 saves on the game. All three goals were scored in the third period or overtime.
Maxim Afinogenov won in overtime giving the Sabres a 2-1 victory in game five.
The Sabres followed it up with a 5-4 win in Buffalo to close out the series. Center Jochen Hecht had the decisive goal putting the Sabres up 5-3 in the third period. It has been the last series that Buffalo has won. They would lose the conference finals 4-1 against the Ottawa Senators.
The Sabres would have two more seasons were they would make the postseason only to lose in the first round. It has been rough for all of Sabres faithful and hopefully both streaks can end next season.
Now the Sabres will need to emulate the pieces from this record-breaking season. Can Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson be like the scorers of that 2007 team? Can whomever be between the pipes be similar to Ryan Miller? Time will tell but Buffalo will need to find out quickly.
It is worth noting that the head coach for this team was Lindy Ruff. Which is more than likely why the front office chose to bring him back to rekindle past magic.
Hopefully the 2025/2026 season will be the team that gets over the hump and ends both streaks.
