Wһісһ Teаm "Won" Tһe NHL Offseаson?

Beginning today I'll be periodically inviting questions for "Ask The Maven." Here's my opener from Avi Polatoff of Far Rockaway, Queens.

"Of the three Met League NHL teams, which have emerged the best in terms of improving themselves since the regular season ended?"

The Maven's Answer: Good question. Cumulatively, I'd go with the Devils who stacked up with a number of solid adds, starting with ex-Flame Jacob Markstrom in goal and defenseman Brett Pesce from Carolina. They also brought back experienced forward Tomas Tatar and got another good backliner in Brenden Dillon.

Another ex-Devil who will return to Newark is rugged forward Stefan Noesen who'll add necessary grit to the attack. Frankly it would be hard to overlook the fact that they signed an experienced – and highly-regarded even in Toronto – new coach in Sheldon Keefe. I give Keefe a lot of credit for handling the Maple Leafs madness as well as anyone going as far back as the last Cup-winning (1967) mentor, Punch Imlach.

Although the Islanders numerical additions may not look overly impressive, the fact that they nabbed Anthony Duclair is a major improvement. He's a consistent 25-goal scorer who'll boost the Isles offense. He's got speed and will snugly fit in the top line with Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal.

One of Lou Lamoriello's surprise additions in 2023-24 was defenseman Mike Reilly. He evolved into a top sixer who outshone those who regarded him a throwaway. Mike brings a veteran presence who can put the puck consistently on net. As a sixth blueliner this past season, he delivered 24 points and was a plus player (plus-1). Not too bad for Lou, finding a gem in the scrapheap.

As for the Rangers, I hate to say this but based on what Chris Drury has done with his roster so far, the Blueshirts limousine has been spinning its wheels. (The key words here are "so far.")

That said, the roster he now features essentially is the same one that won the President's Trophy which – no matter how you look at it – is a major accomplishment. Furthermore they did reach the Conference Finals against Florida – alias the third round of the playoffs; only losing to the Stanley Cup champions in seven games.

It could be said – in all fairness – that all Drury needs to do is add just one or two players at the trade deadline and he just might have a Cup-winner.
