Why Blackhawks rival would be a match made in heaven for Jonathan Toews

Former Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews wants to return to the NHL, and if he does so, one team in particular makes the most sense to sign him, and it is not Chicago.

Jonathan Toews and the Chicago Blackhawks have gone their separate ways, and if the veteran center does return to the NHL, it won't be with the rebuilding team.

A three-time Stanley Cup champion and former Selke award winner, he brings experience, leadership and defensive depth — elements that could benefit a contender with depth at center.

The Dallas Stars come to mind. If they fall short once again, adding Toews could provide the steady, veteran presence they're missing. Blackhawk Up writer Todd Matthews makes a compelling case for the Stars to add Toews.

He may not light up the scoreboard, but his defensive responsibility and leadership in 13-15 minutes per night could be exactly what Dallas needs, especially in the postseason.

Jake Oettinger and the Stars' young core would benefit from that kind of stability. Dallas has gotten close recently — with a 2020 Finals appearance and deep runs in 2022-23 and 2023-24 — but hasn't yet broken through.

Toews is not a messiah, but he could be the missing ingredient that finally puts them over the hump.

Perhaps Winnipeg becomes the more rational choice, as he would head back to his hometown, but if Toews wants one final impactful ride, Dallas could be the perfect place.
