Why the Panthers can’t afford to miss in NFL Draft at pick No. 8

As the Carolina Panthers approach the 2025 NFL Draft, the franchise finds itself at a pivotal crossroads. The 2024 season offered both promise and frustration, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Bryce Young, returning in Week 8, showed growth. Over the final eight games, he posted a 3-5 record, completing 157 of 257 passes (61%) for 1,650 yards and totaling 13 touchdowns (10 passing, 3 rushing). Most notably, he tied for the highest big-time throw percentage in the NFL during that stretch, demonstrating his improved confidence and playmaking ability. However, on the defensive side of the ball, the Panthers faced significant struggles, allowing a record-setting 534 points—the most in a single season in NFL history—and setting franchise lows in interceptions and third-down defense.

The Panthers’ run defense was especially problematic, surrendering at least 195 rushing yards in 10 of 17 games and more than 200 yards in each of the final six contests. Opponents scored 30 or more points in nine games, including three with 40+ points. A major factor in the defense’s struggles was the absence of defensive lineman Derrick Brown, who played just one game due to injury. His absence was particularly felt after his record-setting 2023 season, where he logged the most tackles ever by a defensive lineman. As Brown returns to full strength, he will be a key figure for the Panthers’ defense in 2025, helping to anchor a unit in need of a rebuild.

Why the Panthers can’t afford to miss in NFL Draft at pick No. 8

With so many glaring holes, particularly on defense, the Panthers simply cannot afford to miss with the No. 8 pick in the 2025 Draft. This pick presents a critical opportunity to add a difference-maker who can immediately stabilize the defense and help accelerate the team’s long-term progress. While adding a top-tier wide receiver to complement Bryce Young is a tempting prospect, the team can afford to wait until a future draft to address that need. The focus for 2025 must be on strengthening the defense, which has been the team’s most pressing issue.

Sources suggest the Panthers are being mocked to select Georgia linebacker Jalon Walker with the No. 8 pick, while others have linked them to defensive linemen like Mykel Williams and Mike Green. Given the team’s urgent need for defensive playmakers, selecting a dynamic defender is crucial. A player like Walker, Williams, or Green could provide the leadership and stability the defense needs. Strengthening the defense in the 2025 Draft should be Carolina’s top priority, with future offensive needs, such as adding a wide receiver, able to wait for another year.
