Will Borgen opened up about his five-year contract extension that keeps him in New York for the foreseeable future.
The New York Rangers and Will Borgen agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $4.1 million on Saturday night.
It’s a big commitment made by the Rangers, but it's also a commitment from Borgen to an organization he joined a little over a month ago.
Despite spending only a limited amount of time in New York, Borgen felt comfortable enough to sign this contract, which speaks volumes.
“Pretty quickly,” Borgen said about when he knew he wanted to stay in New York long term. “Once I got settled into the place and got used to everything, it was nothing but great. I like the city a lot, the guys here are great, the organization, everything’s just been great, it’s been fun to play here.”
It’s an exciting time for Borgen as not many players get long-term security. The Rangers immediately took note of Borgen’s worth and saw the potential in him that the Seattle Kraken didn’t see.
“It was a no-brainer for me,” Borgen said. “It was really exciting. Got some security. Going to be here, an original six team for the next five years and I’m just really looking forward to it.”
The 28-year-old has helped elevate the Rangers’ defensive game, something that was in dire need of repair prior to his arrival.
He’s averaging 18:31 minutes in his 18 games with the Rangers, an over three-minute increase from his time in Seattle.
There is something special for Borgen about playing under the bright lights of New York that he cherishes.
“It’s the best,” Borgen said about playing at Madison Square Garden. “It was always my favorite rink to come and play in. It’s always loud, energetic and every single time you get to play in there, it’s awesome.”
Borgen will in all likelihood be in New York for the foreseeable future and Rangers fans should be thrilled about that.
